Organizing

Over 100 years ago the IBEW was founded and it’s Constitution written. The same truths written then still hold true today. The first Object of the IBEW Constitution states “To organize all workers in the entire electrical industry in the United States and Canada, including all those in public utilities and electrical manufacturing, into local unions.” The Declaration of the IBEW Constitution declares “Our cause is the cause of human justice, human rights, and human security.” All of our members take an oath to uphold the IBEW Constitution. That is how the IBEW was founded, that is why it continues to grow today.

Our message is simple, for the majority of workers collective bargaining can improve wages, benefits, and working conditions. The Federal Government supports workers by providing them protection in forming or joining unions through the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).

So is the reason to organize simply to support a doctrine or to build the union coffers? The answer is NO. It is also an economic issue. We understand that in areas that a majority of the work (market share) and the majority of the work force (union density) are under a collective bargaining agreement, the wages are higher, the benefits are more generous, and the working conditions are improved. Currently Local 191 signatory contractors pay over $12.00 per hour for our family medical and retirement funds on top of our wages (inside wiremen’s Westside agreement, i.e.: commercial/industrial electrician). Our commitment to craftsmanship keeps our contractors profitable and allows them to grow.

Often too much emphasis is spent on our differences. However the difference is simple, those working under a collective bargaining agreement, and those who don’t. We all share the same cost of living, and we all realize it gets more and more expensive every day. Help us to help each other to level the playing field.

Two other Objects of the IBEW Constitution are “To cultivate feelings of friendship among those is our industry, and by legal and proper means to elevate the moral, intellectual and social conditions of our members, their families and dependents, in the interest of a higher standard of citizenship.”  Join us in this cause.
