Benefits of the IBEW

The benefit of joining IBEW Local 191 lies in our collective bargaining strength. Collectively we bargain our wages, benefits, and working conditions, to set the standard in our industry.

Through collective bargaining we can choose between three different family medical plans that cover your immediate family regardless of size and no disqualification for preexisting conditions. We also have two dental plans and a vision plan, again with dependent coverage. In addition we have short term disability for off the job injuries that keep you from work. Your health care benefits are paid on top of your wages. Our contractors contribute up to three different retirement plans on our behalf.

Our contract spells out clearly defined working conditions, from pay rate and pay increases, to overtime and shift differentials, even a normal workday. It covers journeymen to apprentice ratios, even crew sizes, and the tools the contractor is responsible for supplying. This is just a brief summary. Our membership has a voice in contract negotiations.

We have a full referral system, if you want a change or get laid off, come into the Hall and sign the books. The person at the top of the list gets first choice of referral to the jobs available for that particular day. In many cases you can choose your job and contractor. No longer do you have to “pound the pavement” looking for work.

As a member you are entitled to representation on the job site. This is even supported by the Federal government. The Weingarten Rule states “If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined or terminated, or affect my personal working conditions, I respectfully request that my union representative, officer, or steward be present at the meeting. Without representation, I choose not to answer any questions.”  Our collective bargaining agreement also covers handling grievances.

As a member, state required CEU classes are free (some require text books for a nominal fee). Some of what is offered includes Code Update, First Aid, NFPA-70e, Instrumentation (80 hrs), PLC (16 hrs), Installing Photovoltaic Systems (16 hrs), and OSHA 10 to name a few. These are also available to non IBEW members as well for $10 per clock hour, plus the cost the cost of text books. These classes are primarily held at our Training Center in Mt Vernon.
